This majestic theatre has been the center of Toledo’s performing arts scene, showcasing some of the country’s greatest performers. Slated for demolition in the early 1980s, the Valentine Theatre was rescued by a remarkable group of Toledoans who recognized the value of this iconic landmark and worked tirelessly to restore it to its former glory. Today, the beautifully renovated Valentine Theatre reflects the spirit, perseverance, and ingenuity of our region, offering a variety of local, national, and international productions and fostering educational and cultural enrichment opportunities for everyone in our community.
Since our gala re-opening in 1999, more than a million people have come through our doors. Annual Attendance at a performance or event at the Valentine averages 50,000. While we are thrilled to once again play a principal role in the economic and cultural revitalization of downtown Toledo, hosting so many visitors has started to take a toll on our century-plus building. Whether it’s refurbishing worn carpeting and seats, overhauling our heating and cooling systems, upgrading to more cost-efficient lighting systems or other capital improvements, the creation of the Historic Legacy Fund will provide the flexibility to address future capital needs in a timely fashion while preserving the Valentine’s historic elegance, functionality, and beauty.
The story of the Valentine Theatre is remarkable -- a true Toledo story of grit, determination, perseverance, and unwavering vision in the face of overwhelming odds. As we chart a course for the next 100 years (yes, we dream big at the Valentine!), we invite you to join us in supporting the Valentine Theatre’s Historic Legacy Fund, to once again show your tremendous loyalty to the Valentine Theatre. Your gift will ensure that this iconic part of Toledo history will be preserved for many generations to come.
Thank you for considering a gift and for your continued support of the Valentine Theatre.
The Valentine Theatre is creating the Historic Legacy Fund to address the future ongoing maintenance and capital needs of the Valentine Theatre building. As we approach our 125th anniversary, the age of our building coupled with the routine wear-and-tear of hosting more than a million visitors since our re-opening in 1999 has prompted us to set up a fund that will allow us to ensure the long-term sustainability of the venerable Valentine.
The Fund will be used as needed to address the ongoing operational and capital needs of the Valentine Theatre. Examples could include: repairing our heating and cooling systems; replacing worn carpeting; refurbishing theatre seats; installing greener, more cost-efficient lighting; and any capital improvements which extend or preserve the life of the Valentine Theatre.
When the Valentine Theatre reopened in 1999, the Trustees established a $5 million endowment to be used “to offset the Valentine Theatre’s yearly general operating expenses.” The Historic Legacy Fund, in contrast, will be used to address ongoing capital improvements to the Valentine Theatre building.
